Technology was introduced as a Leaving Certificate subject in 2007 after several
years of development and is now one of four senior cycle technology-based subjects
on the curriculum. To the outside observer, its introduction may appear confusing,
particularly in the context of three long-established technology-based subjects on the
curriculum. This first section aims to outline the background which led to its
establishment as a senior cycle subject. In order to outline this its development must
be seen in the broader historical context of the provision of technology-based subjects
in Irish post-primary schools.
