The behavioural traits and characteristics of high and low expectation/growth entrepreneurs: is there a difference?
Purpose: This exploratory study examines the behavioural traits and characteristics of entrepreneurs of high and low-expectation/growth companies in Ireland. In particular an emphasis is placed on: the demographic profile of the entrepreneur and their business; occupational background; educational attainment; and the motivational factors influencing new venture creation.
Approach: The research involves a two-stage study with the first phase focusing on an extensive literature review of the key sources of secondary research including reports, articles, and publications. The second stage of the exploratory study involves surveying owner-managers of high and low-expectation/growth businesses. The scales in the questionnaire were developed in a theory-driven manner.
Results: The results indicate that there are a number of key differences between high expectation/growth and low expectation/growth entrepreneurs. The most consistent differences relate to their education, the industry sector they are operating in and the procedures behind planning for the business. Furthermore, the study identifies different financing methods adopted by the entrepreneurs on starting and growing the business.
