Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to examine the role of Cumann na mBan in Limerick City and on a national basis. It is often presumed that Cumann na mBan played solely an auxillary role. While this is so for its earlier years, on closer examination it emerges that Cumann na mBan made a crucial contribution to the nationalist movement. Furthermore, rather than submissively accepting their auxillary role, through their involvement the women became acutely aware of their own lack of status and sought not only Ireland's freedom but women's equal citizenship within that new Ireland. Immediately after the Rising Cumann na mBan played a crucial role. It increased its links with other women's organisations and became more confident and assertive. These developments on a national level were also reflected within the local Limerick branch which operated effectively and efficiently. The contribution made by the Daly Family, and especially Madge Daly to the branch was particularly important.
