Abstract
Physical activity (PA) is a lifestyle behaviour linked with numerous health and social benefits. PA was established as a protective factor against mortality due to coronary heart disease in the 1950s (Morris et al., 1953) and, since then, active lifestyles have been linked to health improvements on a variety of conditions including anxiety (McDowell et al., 2018; 2019), depression (Choi et al., 2019; Heissel et al., 2023), type two diabetes (Aune et al., 2015) and cancer (Fong et al., 2012; McTiernan et al., 2019). Uptake of physically active forms of travel can ease pressure on transport systems helping to ameliorate traffic congestion and contributing to the realisation of sectoral emissions targets (de Nazelle et al., 2010). Participation in active recreation can support social cohesion and civic engagement (Putnam, 2000), as individuals involved in community sports clubs or walking groups often become more active in local decision-making and volunteer efforts.
