Decoding public perception: knowledge, attitudes, and practices on WHOFCTC articles 9 and 10 in India
Date

Abstract
Background Tobacco use causes over 7 million deaths annually, with India being a major producer and consumer. Despite existing control policies, implementation gaps persist. World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Articles 9 and 10 call for the regulation of tobacco contents, emissions, and disclosures. However, limited research exists on the Indian population’s knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding these articles. This study aims to assess KAP and inform strategies for improved awareness and compliance. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2024 among Indian adults (18+ years) using a structured, pretested online questionnaire. The tool captured demographics and KAP related to tobacco product regulation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression. Results Among 106 participants (68.9% aged 21–40; 53.8% male), 66% were postgraduates. Awareness of Articles 9 and 10 was 54.7% and 56.6%, respectively. Age influenced knowledge (p = 0.049) and attitudes (p = 0.005), with younger individuals showing stronger attitudes but moderate knowledge. Experience in tobacco control significantly improved knowledge (p = 0.003). Conclusions While support for tobacco regulation is strong, knowledge gaps remain. Strengthening targeted awareness and implementing WHO FCTC Articles 9 and 10 effectively is essential for impactful tobacco control in India.
