Dance for people living with Parkinson's disease: recommendations for meaningful, sustainable community programmes
Date
2025
Abstract
This booklet was developed as an information resource for dance facilitators and community organisations involved in the planning and delivery of dance programmes for people living with Parkinson's disease. It specifically focuses on strategies for supporting meaningful participant engagement and long-term programme sustainability.
This resource was informed by extensive literature analyses, as well as interviews with dance teachers, dancers, and representatives from community organisations. The relevance of the recommendations included may vary based on the programme and setting.
This resource is not fully comprehensive—it is intended to encourage reflection on meaningful engagement and serve as a starting point in intentional sustainability planning. Those interested in starting dance for Parkinson's classes must seek out additional resources, training, and advice prior to starting a programme, as well as guidance from healthcare professionals where needed.
Facilitators are responsible for ensuring that they have the proper skills and training to facilitate dance classes for people with neuromuscular conditions. The authors of this resource do not accept responsibility for any injury, harm, or damage caused resulting from the use of the recommendations in this resource.
