Abstract
The office of the President of Ireland plays an important constitutional role. Ireland is generally classified as a semi-presidential system where the President is directly elected by the people while executive authority rests with the Taoiseach and the Cabinet. While the Irish President is directly elected, it is generally considered a weak presidency. However, despite the President’s limited executive role, the presidency is far from insignificant. The President carries considerable symbolic authority, performing key constitutional functions such as serving as Head of State and protecting the Constitution. As the office derives its authority from the electorate, the manner in which candidates can gain access to the ballot is of real democratic importance.
